why does my gain always have to be so high?

Make sure your sub lvl is at max on your headunit, that aq1200 gain goes from 5v-.1v. Half is like 2.5v
I just got a new headunit as well, Kenwood KDC-X396.

You say I should turn up the subwoofer level all the way on my deck? Even at 5/15 sub level it is pretty loud at 29/35 volume which is where i tuned it at.

It has three 4 volt outputs as well, one for rear, front, and sub.

When the sub lvl is at 15/15 its sending a full 4V signal down the line, now ure gain may be set over then that, which would be the reason its pretty loud at 5/15. U can turn the sub lvl to max and set gain that way, or just leave it alone so you can toy with it. If you have a DMM check ure preout voltage at lets say 7/15 then u can adjust according to song
