Why do my rear 6x9's sound crappy?

2000 Grand Prix. When I had my stock speakers in with deck power they didnt sound horrible..but not good. I added power to stock speakers and it sounded worse. I replaced stock speakers with Alpine type R 6x9's (mounted in stock rear deck location) and have added a 50 watt Halfer 2 channel amp to drive them....and they STILL dont sound very good. Granted...these are just for rear fill and I barely have them on. But even if I just listen to them by themselves and give it more power...they just dont sound great.

I'm pretty sure I overbought for what I needed. I forget what RMS is for these Type R's...but mayve I'm not giving them enough power. However...I think that its just the fact that the sound has to bounce off the rear window to reach my ear that makes them sound so crummy.

Depending on the setup you might have:

a) A time delay problem.

b) A phasing problem (similar to time delay but not quite the same)

c) A rear baffle that is not allowing a linear response (my mystang's rear baffle creates a very strong midbass bump)

Hope you get it all figured out!

So how do I determine if its any of these? And more importantly...what do I do? Buy a deck with time adjustment?

I think you might be onto something with the time delay. I have noticed that sometimes the vocals will actually get less when I bring the 6x9's into the mix along with my fronts. This is with 80% front and 20% rears.

FWIW, My fronts are rainbow 5 1/4's.

Hmm, your eq doesn't have Time correction? You might go that rout other than a new deck...unless you wanted an excuse to buy a new deck //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

what is your bass setting and gain on the rears? you really should have them turned down. it seems like you are trying to draw too much to the rear. your front stage should be up front. if you are still looking for a deck that has all the processing i know where you can get a nifty eclipse deck //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The EQ unit that I have is an older Alpine 3331 eq. 11 bands of eq with sub, rear and front outputs plus rear/front fader. No time delay.. This baby is like 10 years old but is a great eq. Missing all these new features though..

My gains are set up a bit on the Halfer amp...but my fader on the EQ that controls the level is really low.
