why do kickers like high tuning frequencies? i have noticed that all of their boxes are tuned to 36+ range, when JL is like 30 Hz, mtx is like 34-35Hz. my over all question is why do the companies say to tune your box so high, when high tuning is ment for test tones and competition. when 28-33Hz is good for a flat responce and 34-35 is ment for SQL and 35+ is for just SPL? Thanks, Andrew

i know i dont have to go by what they say. i was just wondering why they say to tune that high and when i made a box for a L7 and it was the reccomended tuning Hz of 37Hz it sounded good all round...and i thought 37Hz was supposed to be for test tones.

It depends on the speaker and car....

Flat response can't be gauranteed with all speakers in all cars, with any tuning.

I think the reason kicker recommends such high tuning in their huge ported boxes is because they're meant more for suv's/big open vehicles, where you'd expect cabin gain around the F3 rolloff of such a high-tuned box, 35-38hz...

Another reason is that most amplifiers with bass-boost circuits have their bass boost ~45hz, so tuning that high definitely increases the effectiveness of the boost.

And the last reason i can think of, is the reason for tuning low is not to eliminate peakyness, my 30hz box is still plenty peaky when a note goes that low, but to increase transient response above tuning, and honestly, i love kicker subs to death, but i've never heard one sealed or ported, in any setup that had GREAT transient response anyways, so there's a good chance anyone buying a kicker is not buying it for SQ.
