Why did this happen?

Was listening to my 2 12 inch aq sdc's on the way home today and i noticed they werent hitting very hard. So i turned it down and looked at em and one was hanging half way out of the box.... I get home and notice that like 5 out of the 8 screws came unscrewed and the ones that came out were like broken in half. Do i need thicker screws or something? What kinda of screws do i need?

What kind of screws did you use?

Normally if a screw breaks it is because it was not fully tight and the sub going back and forth snaps the screw, this will also pull screws out.

You can also over tighten them causing the wood to be stripped which will allow them to be pulled from the wood.

Ya i dont think i tightened enough then :/ idk what kind of screw they are i bought the box and subs off craigslist.

You might try using bolts and hurricane nuts (should be available at local hardware store). The nuts will keep you from stripping the wood and will give you a more secure mount for the bolts because it's metal on metal. They look like this:

Best option in most cases. Not all, but most.

Will they fit in the existing screw holes in the box?

Good God.....people over thinking the problem again (Not you, OP). There's nothing wrong with T-Nuts if you need them.......available at any hardware store.

I've never needed anything more than regular drywall screws or wood screws. If you drive the screw straight and make sure it goes all the way through the baffle (just the tip poking through), it will not pull out.

How is discussing issues that cause such things to happen over thinking?

I would just go with a slightly thicker wood screw .... Go to home depot and see what the got 1" should be just fine .... I used regular 3/4" drywall screws on my powerbass 15 3xl ...... My box

broke before any screw ever came loose lol

Your enclosure should not break //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

No, you will probably have to drill the hole out larger. Keep in mind when installing these your holes need to be fairly accurate. Metal threads aren't nearly as forgiving as MDF so if your hole is off slightly or the nut is threaded in crooked it will be a PITA to get the bolt in...

Hurricane nuts are a lot like T-nuts....except stronger //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

The suggested "fix" for the problem was using Hurricane nuts.....which are more expensive, harder to find, and require a more accurate hole to be drilled for threading in.

A simple T-Nut is only 15 cents or so at a local hardware store. A complete moron can install a T-Nut without even having to drill an accurate hole. A T-Nut will NOT pull through without considerable force and requires no threading into the wood. That is why a lot of speaker cabinet manufactures for Marshall, Ampeg, Carvin, etc use T-Nuts to hold in speakers on road worthy speaker cabs.

This forum is full of people who want to give advice, but they don't think about how easy it will be for a newbie to find the hardware/tools and be able to install it with zero troubles. Its like telling someone to buy a Time-Cert when they could just tap a hole to the next larger size.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I can see that. I have my own issues with either solution to be honest. lol In most cases though they are not actually needed as most of the people should not have a need to remove their subs once installed. However, we all know how people are so they are not a bad option for some. Just don't go buy another sub and expect it to be a perfect match to the current bolt setup. Not saying it won't be, but it very well may not be.

Agreed. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif That's why wood screws or drywall screws will work for 99% of the installs. Only reason I could think of not using them might be for some inverted subs or some type of install that puts a lot of strain on the mounting screws.
