Why Companies Going To Old School Approach

I just read a thread on Phoenix Gold going back to an old school approach of car audio products (speakers, amps, etc) which I think is great. But Soundstream, Orion and PPI are doing the same thing. Why are some of the popular companies back in the 80's and 90's going back to the old school approach when they never should have changed things in the first place? I know they are trying to save money on costs but there has got to be more to it?

Didn't Penn and Teller do an episode on Nostalgia saying it is BS?

Regardless, I doubt they will re-attract consumers in our age group. One of my friends, a former car audio enthusiast, tossed all the Punch 150s that I sold to him in the 90s. I only found out when I called him a couple of years ago offering to buy them all back.

His response:

"I am married with kids and tossed all that stuff out when cleaning the attic because I am too old to do a system now. I wish I would have known that you wanted them back because I would have given them to you."

It bummed me out to learn that my old gear was just tossed in the garbage in perfect working condition. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

ETA: Just thought of something. Maybe "Going back to the Old School" is their way of justifying charging top dollar for products that are made overseas. I remember hearing a rumor last year at this time from someone in the industry about that Orion throwback series. Initial MSRP suggestions were at the $1 per watt range and the 5,000 watt Class D was originally set to have a $4,999.99 MSRP. I see that has since changed, BUT, DEI's Orion is still overpriced and only shares LOOKS with the Orion of old.

They are expecting to gain old customers or attract new customers with the old school appraoch. IMO the 90's was the prime for this hobby and they want to bring that back. I understand. Also, the companies you just named really did their best work then also.

PG?! It gotta be at least NC-17 for me.

From the companies mentioned, it just seems that's they're just trying to make people think that their products' quality will be like the old school times even after they've been bought out.

Just NC-17? I need obscure, hardcore fetish XXX to get me going these days. Remember, I am old and have seen/experienced a lot. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Take for example, Soundstream..... Their initial claim was that the Reference of new shared the same characteristics of the original reference series (not S/SX). Good job, here it is 10 to 15 years later and they are going back to the "old school". So much for technology and innovation.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

ETA: I also can't let the new SoundStream live down their 20 Hz to 20 kHz +/- 3dB response plot. Again, all this technology and that is the best they can do by going back to the "old school" way..... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

i had lunch with the PG rep. he had been with them for a long time and from the start, the did make nice stuff. the rep said the lost sight of what they were! they got bought by aamp of america who has $ to invest...pg went from 150+ pps to less than 20. and the truth is the kept us made price and went over seas. they went from Phoenix Gold to pg....the best stuff they had went by the way side and the got into the wrong market....now they want to get back to the glory days. good idea, but it will take a few years to get back if they do at all. i didnt pick them up to much $ for what the offer

The older equipment was built here in the US and hardly ever blew up. You could pound the shit out of it all day in 100 degree weather and it aint shutting down. I used to hook up Rockford Fosgate punch 40/80 amps for systems with 2 15s and they were loud as hell daily. You couldnt destroy those amps.

Nowadays, 90% are made overseas. So they blow easy. Temp, terminals touch a millisecond, anything. So warrenty has to be eating away at thier profits.

So why not go back to the stuff people loved and trusted.

This explains why I use older "built like a tank" made in the USA Rockford Fosgate amps.

It, at least in part, is a way to try and advertise the 'made in USA' notion that endears so many 'old school' fans to old school products. IMO 'made in China' and the conglomerating of many old favorite companies in the industry into larger corporations has given many of these companies and name brands a negative perception in the market, a trend they wish to reverse.

On another note, they picked the perfect economy to attempt to reverse this trend in, didn't they?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
