phyphoestilic is my hero... he walked me through what i needed to do and download and now i have sound!

If its not detecting your sound hardware, go to device manager and uninstall the audio devices. Restart the pc. Install the newest audio drivers for your motherboard. If there are no places in the back to plug in your audio you must have a REALLY old computer, or your onboard soundcard has been removed. Most boards have the inputs on them.
