who killed the economy?!?!

But isn't that how we define a recession? Or are we changing that too?
Yes the techincal definition is a decrease in the real GDP, but like you said, how many times do those numbers come out per decade, and when does common sense come into play?

U.S. employers shed 63,000 jobs in February 2008, the most in five years, supporting the view that the U.S. is falling into a recession. NBER's president, Martin Feldstein, recently said on March 14, 2008 we are in a recession, though it was not an official NBER declaration...

Then what the hell would we talk about?
The actual state of things now, not how they will be when said group declares a recession by definition after obtaining slow data.

Or we can just say it doesn't meet the textbook definition of a recession and stop there, and I guess we wouldn't have anything to talk about...since we can't call this a "recession"

Point being arguing symantecs gains nothing to further the understanding of where we are, it'll just help us understand where we have been once we get there...

That's the part where you start to lose me again. Not a single one of those jobs were lost in my region. In fact, my region is still growing in both the business sector and the personal sector. I'd be willing to bet that on the other side of the nation it is the same.

I would think that somewhere in the definition of a recession that it has to be a national impact, not just a local one to, say, the economy surrounding the manufacturing buildings of the big 3 auto manufactures.

Well maybe thats why we have different views...here in NC, many jobs have been lost. I don't know...

I don't think that would have an impact on the overall conversation. Maybe 2-3 posts between Flip and Ranger tops. You could call it a fiscal decline, hell you could call it Ms. Piggy, and my comments would barely alter and I don't think Ranger's would change much either.

Well you need to get the hell out of NC then, mayne. It sounds depressing as hell.
Its cool...I'm doing well and my family is as well...mostly blue collars being caught in this. All in all, when December comes around, I think this will determined to be a mild recession. When was the last "official" recession...2001? And it was uneventful.

I see many jobs lost on the news, but among the people I associate with (friends/family/coworkers), little has changed in the last few years for us so it doesn't seem as bad for some of us.

Doesn't mean I don't see the writing on the wall for the future for alot of us though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Thats where I was going with it, no sense arguing definitions when we all have a personal view of the situation around us. Sure we need benchmarks but that doesn't help us right now.

Me neither, but then again, I'm an upper middle class college student...I don't have many or actually any lower/lower-middle class friends really. Not that its my choice, but thats just who I hang around.

And for the second time, I'll say this. This is an awesome topic, and I have really enjoyed debating this properly.
It actually bothers me more to talk about it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I hate not having answers

WTF. Now you two are agreeing with me? lawl

Sure, the lower class is the one taking the hit. So fricken what. That has always been the case. That's not a differentiator. And I agree 1000% on your comment about 2001, Ranger.

Even if it did take you a little while to figure out my approach. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
