my amp stopped working out of nowhere last night. opened it up and after looking for awhile, i found a couple charred wires pointed out by the arrows. as far as i can tell, that is the only thing wrong. everything else looks like its in perfect condition.

who can fix, and how much do you estimate it to cost

for the transformer to fail like that, there's probably something else wrong with it...

transformer would cost 30 cents worth of wire to rewind it, and maybe an hours work...

thats not $400.. lol

It's probably not the transformer. There's probably some dark colored glue on there that he thinks is charred. These amps die from vibration. I have never seen a 40.1 fail for any other reason, regardless of what it's owner thought. And I told him $300-$400. Geez, this is why I don't come here much, everyone wants to play amp repair guy... but has no experience with whatever amp they are talking about, dB-r is the Authorized IA Repair Shop, we have rebuilt a few.... Anyone who repairs amps more than a couple a year anyway, would tell you that it's NEVER what it looks like. If you took the amp apart the mosfets would likely fall out on the floor. Seen it dozens of times, if not hundreds of times by now.

yeah, I'm aware its probably not the transformer, but YOU gave a quote by looking at that pic, I simply responded to your quote by also looking at that pic!

$400 is still a retardedly high quote though!

No dude, I gave a quote based on experience working on these amps. Maybe you need to re-read my post to understand exactly what I said, and quit pretending you know something about these amps that you don't. How many 40.1's have you worked on?

Why is everyone on car audio .com a freaking smart *** genius? ****...

yeah 400 is alot, but if you look at it the right way it isnt.

to get another amp that will do the same amount of power is gonna be atleast $600. i can get prolly 250 for this one so im still looking at atleast 350 to get the power.

The quote most likely includes replacing the entire power supply and/or output section FET banks... Chris normally does a FULL re-build to make sure the amp actually IS fixed when you get it back.

Yes, leaving used parts in there doesn't qualify as a Complete REBUILD here at dB-r. Would you rebuild an engine just replacing the bad piston, rings and bearings, in just 1 of the cylinders? Sure it might work, some shop DO operate that way, they are called SHADE TREE MECHANICS, this shop doesn't operate that way.... All parallel groups get replace with NEW matching date code OEM or BETTER parts. You get your money's worth. That's why our shop is so popular, people know they aren't getting shafted here, we hold a higher standard than some other shops do when it comes to what qualifies as a "repair" or "rebuild" compared to a "quick fix" that most shops do, that's why they charge less.
