Well, I wouldnt call $30 billion for just one of 4 companies little profit.
Also, I know they dont set the price, the market does that...but OPEC and the oil companies arent helping...
But who came to their rescue when oil was trading at $17/bbl a decade ago?

I think you are not knowing what a profit margin is.
The amount of profit is huge...the margins are small. Lowe's has higher margins.
People just don't get it. They just see the huge profits posted by the oil companies and start freaking out, without looking into numbers to see what the margins are.

Market sets the price my ***. Gas prices have jumped 40 cents in the past 3 weeks.... the demand dint jump because of one holiday weekend/

Opec nations can do as they please.... and they are.

Until this country gets off our reliance on foreign oil, we are screwed. i will support whatever candidates are serious about alternative energy resources.

The sun can supply us with all the energy we need. Just have to have the guts to spend now to make it happen.

How can we say we can not afford to put solar panels on new homes because they are too expensive and nobody will be able to afford a new home?Yet home prices tripled and people were still buying.

It is just a matter of priorities. We can hardly whine about 5 dollar a gallon gas when we want to ***** about any costs needed to get us off oil.

By what mechanism is price set? A lottery? Random number generator? Magic 8ball? Roll of dice?

I can afford to buy a home because I can get it on reasonable terms of credit. The same cannot be said for solar panels. If I could borrow at 5% to get some solar panels that would pay for themselves in a year, I would be on board. But I am not going to go through the trouble of saving nickels and dimes for something that won't payoff until the next couple moves in.

Look at the price of oil, which is fueled by the market. OPEC helps decide the flow of oil which can lead to speculation and prices rising, but we also produce almost half of the oil we use here at home in our country. Canada and Mexico, two of our three top importers of oil aren't even part of OPEC. Me thinks OPEC isn't as important as some make it out to be.

Until we can find a more practical way to store energy, solar energy just isnt feasible on a grand scale yet.

This cant happen...

If the United States had to supply its entire demand of 21 million barrels per day (3.3×106 m3/d) without resorting to foreign imports, existing US reserves would last only three years at the current rate of consumption.

The only real way for us to not rely on forign oil would be find a way to use the oil shale located here. And that would cost a fortune. If we did however, it would/should provide us with 100+ years of oil that wouldnt have to be imported.

It would be during peak demand periods...especially out in CA where there is abundant sun/demand/desert.
There is abundant enough sun anywhere. The problem lies in the storage of this power. We do not have the battery or other storage technology to do for cities or counties. It works as supplemental energy just fine but not as a whole.

But this also has more to do with coal than oil, unless you take heating oil and natural gas into effect which is another story.

Not true.

Our supply is around 20 million barrels a day.

We produce 5 million here at home.

A few hom ebuilders here in Northern California have recently announced they are building all of their new homes with Solar panels as part of the house. the govt has some rebates/ incentives.... Im not up on all of it, but......... our here where the sun is shining the govt should MANDATE solar panels on all new homes.

The number of solar panels being produced would skyrocket, costs would come down, and in 10 years most would have them I suspect. It is a win win for everyone involved. I just dont buy cost as the issue when it comes to NEW homes.

I have seen a show where some guy was working on a new type of cell that he thinks will costs less than 10% of what solar cells currently cost.

All I am saying is that the technology exists for all of us to be using them,....... but we as individuals cant get it done. it takes the govt to get serious about making this happen.

Same with smog laws out in the West, same with smoking in public places, same with seat belt laws. Someone just needs to have the balls to step up and make it happen. The benefits are huge..... but as well all have been told... WE ARE ADDICTED TO OIL.

My a.., we just have no real alternatives. Give us a viable alternative to oil and most will take it IMO.

You're an idiot...

Obama has never told a lie...he doesnt know the man who married him and whomb he spoke of frequently in his book. Yeah, he neeeever tells lies.

Clinton just happened to get off the plane being riddled with sniper fire...yet the video shows here waving her happy little mittens.

STFU.

ZOMG ZOMG!! DONT TELL MCCAIN YOUR POLICIES OBAMA!! HE MIGHT STEAL THEM!!! (nation sits and wonders what the fuck Obama is going to do because he wont tell anyone, because he is afraid McCain will steal them, because republicans are liers, because richerich is the bestest.)

Seriously...
you are about as whitty as everyone else that has to revert to name calling to try and win and arguement.

you helped prove my point - they all lie!!!!

What I will not vote for is a man affiliated with a party that has deteriated this country over the past 8 yrs and for a man that says we will continue down this same path.
