i have mine ontop of the box so its not cramped up like it would if it was mounted behind the box

putting it on the box makes a nice little package for thieves also... but if you aren't worried about that, then yeah. and most amps don't like to be mounted upside down

I have mine mounted on top of the box as well. I have a roomy trunk. It works well for my setup. Certainly one thing to consider is breathing room for the amp.
