Where did the EQs go??

Maybe I'm on crack, but it seems like 4-5 years ago more HUs had 4,5,7 band EQs. With the exception of Pioneer and Panasonic most HUs in the $150 to $350range have 3 band EQs, I even saw an Alpine that claimed a "2 band EQ". My current Eclipse cd5435 has a 3 band and that's one of the biggest reasons I'll be upgrading soon.

I'm looking at an Eclipse cd5000, or a Pio 590 or 690. Any others that have at least a 5 band EQ, i-pod / USB input, and are about $250?

Might as well join the convo on the new alpine deck below...

One word: Consumer

Not many people in the broad spectrum really care about SQ...they just want it loud. The stores cater to that by providing minimalistic, flashy headunits to the consumer. Companies see this trend, and see what sells and make that type of product. Simple as that.

yeah thats really fkn sad. it blows my mind how anyone would want nothing but SPL and absolutely no SQ. fortunately there are still a few decks out there that will provide you with a decent EQ. look into the pioneer 780mp/980bt and the 880prs, the JVC SH1000, and if you really dont mind paying a load of money, the Eclipse CD7100.

I agree that all the decks you mention are great units. Budget has me looking a level below those though. How much SQ sacrifice will I make with a Pioneer 590 or 690? Where does the Eclipse CD5000 fit in there?

This question might deserve it's own thread, but how much difference is there in SQ comparing say a Pio 880 to a Pio 590? Would I be able to hear the difference while driving my Toyota PU?

I got my Pioneer 4800MP because it was cheap and played mp3 cd's, but I kinda wish I would have spent a little extra on something with more than 3 eq settings now.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Pioneer still has a 7-band on the 5900 models and above. Alpines 2 band eq is because its a parametric, means you can change the frequency. I agree most stuff now doesnt have much processing. Hell sony has a deck with 13 band right and left, t/a and crossovers but it doesnt have much sq. Alpine is coming back out with a deck that is about the same as the 9835 but does ipod.
