when power wire is too big?

I realize you were saying it wasn't 1/0. I was referring to your reasoning for saying that size affects the size needed in the run coming to the amp. If that wasn't your point, Im confused why you said what you did at all.
Im not suggesting you are retarded jamc, but we all make mental errors once in a while. I think you just made one, no big deal. No need to get upset.
He was making fun of the OP's reasoning that having a small portion of the entire wiring downsized to 4 gauge would defeat the purpose by pointing out that the wiring still continues inside the amp where its downsized anyways.

Holy run-on sentence

he was pointing out that the reasoning for not cutting the wire was wrong because the internal wiring in the amp is most likely 8g or smaller

but isnt trimming the wire just like changing it back down to 4guage and completely defeating the purpose of using bigger wire in the first place?
The minimal amount going into the terminal won't make a difference if it is 4ga. The main importance is that the remainder of the 16ft run is 1/0 ga. The connection to the amp just isn't long enough to make a difference. Just trim it and be done.

That's really not fair to say. Wire sizing has as much to do with run length as it does with current capacity. So you implying 4ga is all that should ever be necessary, since its whats physically in the chassis of the amplifier, is not valid.
I think you misunderstood him. I think he is trying to say what you are but differently and with much more emphasis on sarcasm. The runs inside an amp are short so a small cable can be used. It's his way of saying the 1/2" of 4 ga on the end of a 1/0 ga cable is OK. I'm sure he doesnt believe 20 ft runs of 4ga are = to 20 ft of 1/0ga. At least I hope he isnt saying that.

EDIT: I didn't read the thread and see I am beating a dead horse. I like necro-beastiality. It is teh when.

The entire run of 1/0 has less resistance than a 4 gauge run would. When you have 20 feet of 1/0 the trimming to 4 gauge for 1/2" won't effect the current running through it. Thats why you can get away with fuses, they are small gauge but the length of them is short enough so it doesn't matter.
Technically, bigger wire has more resistance.

But bigger wires can accept more current without having that energy lost in the form of heat/etc. And trimming it really shouldn't have too significant a difference.
