when power wire is too big?

what do you guys do when your power wire wont fit into the amp's terminal? in searching people say trim the wire, but doesnt that just defeat the purpose of using a larger sized wire? i need to put 1/0 into a viper2500, but the terminal will barely accept 4 gauge. ive seen people recommend these downsizer plugs for the cable, but those things are real expensive, and ive read they dont fit in all amps? what should i do?

Trimming the cable or utilizing a reducer is generally the best two methods.

There are some 1/0awg to 4awg reducers for sale in our Classifieds currently fairly reasonable //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

you could ghetto rig it and cut off the excess wire. that's what i did until i bought the 1/0 to 4ga reducers
but isnt trimming the wire just like changing it back down to 4guage and completely defeating the purpose of using bigger wire in the first place?

I have two 1/0 to 4ga reducers laying around if I can find them ill give them to you just pay shipping. I will dig around a little later.

The entire run of 1/0 has less resistance than a 4 gauge run would. When you have 20 feet of 1/0 the trimming to 4 gauge for 1/2" won't effect the current running through it. Thats why you can get away with fuses, they are small gauge but the length of them is short enough so it doesn't matter.

Yes, if you trimmed that copper out the entire length of the wire, it would then be like running 4ga. But you would only be trimming some at the very end of the wire.

I recommend the reducers.

Maybe you should upgrade the wiring inside the amplifier to 1/0 gauge, too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
That's really not fair to say. Wire sizing has as much to do with run length as it does with current capacity. So you implying 4ga is all that should ever be necessary, since its whats physically in the chassis of the amplifier, is not valid.

No, I was saying the wiring inside the amplifier isn't 1/0 gauge, either ...
I know overall resistance has several factors including length ... I'm not retarded ...
I realize you were saying it wasn't 1/0. I was referring to your reasoning for saying that size affects the size needed in the run coming to the amp. If that wasn't your point, Im confused why you said what you did at all.

Im not suggesting you are retarded jamc, but we all make mental errors once in a while. I think you just made one, no big deal. No need to get upset.
