When caps actually work......

as we all know it takes power to make power. and a capacitor's job is simply to store some power and release it very very quickly (quicker then batteries can, theoretically)....then we have our fundimental flaw of that people buy these things when they dont have the power to make the power they want, and in turn waste thier money.

well what if you DO have the power? say 220amp alty, a kinetik 2400 in the back, another kinetik up front(probly a 1400), 2 runs of 1/0awg..... would it actually make a differance for burps or daily? say 4kw rms and a 5 farad cap? anyone actually use a cap when they have all the electrical upgrades to provide that cap with the power it needs to do its job? or do only jackasses buy them when they dont know anything about car audio and get sold by some ******* in retail thats trying to make a commission (reminds me of the downsouth customs employee (winter haven) recommending an 1800w O2 amp over my kx 2500.1, ya ****ing right)......

 
basically your cap works as a buffer so you can maintain a constant current flow to your amp with no drops or delays. the extra batteries will also work as this buffer so a cap is essentially useless in your situation

its all about the esr of the battery. some batteries (like agm cells) have 1/4 the esr (or lowwer) of typical wet cells. people will also say batteries chemical reaction makes them slow..but that is a batteries ESR! batteries advantage is it can supply needed current as well

I've seen alot of capacitor threads over the years. I have not seen anyone

post any 'tested data' that batteries are slow. lol.

You can calculate the Joules of a capacitor to see how much energy you

get when the voltage drops.

Hypothetical.

1. Your electrical is 14V. The 5F cap is charged at 14V.

2. 5F cap Joules = 1/2 (C V^2) = 490 Joules.

3. The electrical system drops to 12V.

4. The capacitor voltage dropped from 14V to 12V.

5. The capacitor at 12V is storing 360 Joules.

6. You had 490 Joules and it's now 360 Joules, it's safe to assume

that only 130 Joules were disharged out of a total stored 490 Joules.

For reference;

* 130 Joules is 130 watts per second

* 130 Joules is 31 calories

* 130 Joules is 48 micro horsepower per hour.

* A high end, high power home amp may store about 800 Joules on it's PS rails {using conventional 60hz PS}.

* A high end, pro audio amp *or* car amp {both using SMPS) may store about 80 Joules on it's PS rails.

* Rockford Fosgate T15KW amp stores 240,000 Joules.

Your capacitor isn't going to help you very much when you're running 5kw, that is unless you get a 10+ farad capacitor, in which case you should just buy more batteries.

pretyy much what i figured...wasnt sure if itd make a differance with lot of batteries, but it makes ense that it wouldnt do much...

 
Caps with digital voltage meters have higher esr values as well I believe
yup

but as with anything (caps included) a solid electrical system is needed alt and battery/batteries are needed (depending on system power) to reap full benifit. nothing is magical
