When are 45's needed???

They even out the pressure transfer in the enclosure. That equal pressure helps keep a more consistent pressure on the port.

Using them inside a port is for a different purpose though. That's so the air mass doesn't slam into a perpendicular surface at 90* bends. With a 45* angle in place, the air mass change directions easier and with less eddy currents (turbulence). The 45 also helps keep the air mass the correct amount for the calculated tuning frequency.
