I used to like clarion until mine decided to stop playing CDs one day, It seems like alot of ppl like eclipse, alpine, pioneer, which the only reason i can think of people liding the eclipse is for the 8v preouts, as for the others i have no idea. Pansonics are my fav...

I like my Eclipse more for the quality D/A converter more than for 8v preouts. My old Alpine was a solid unit as well.

I'll be the weirdo and give an answer that wasn't an option:

I have been for years (and most likely will continue to be) A die-hard Kenwood loyalist. My very first aftermarket HU was a Coustic RX504 cassette deck that I fried by hooking up like 16 speakers of varying impendences (everyone is a n00b at one time or another ) to it. After that went up in smoke I was convinced by a salesman to get a Blaupunkt SQR49 Boston ~ one of the very first Blaupunkts with the code-protection built into it. Three in a row of those fried (due to a faulty circuit in the code protection feature) and I vowed to never again own a Blaupunkt product.

After that I bought my first Kenwood and over the several years-long span that I have been buying their products I have only had a problem out of one single deck and that was b/c I spilled an entire 12oz. Sprite into the back of it. I never owned one of those D-Mask+ motorized faceplate models that were so problematic, thankfully. If I had it might have put me off of buying Kenwood gear.

If I can liquidate some of my surplus gear (a 50x4 amp, a 50x2 amp, and my current HU) when I get back stateside I might look into either the eXcelon KDC-X889 or the 25th Anniversary XXV-01D to upgrade.

My favorite headunit brand changes based on price range, but some on my hitlist that are current models (in order of price) are:

1. Sony CDXF-7715X

2. Alpine 9855/ Kenwood XXV-01D

3. Clarion DRZ-9255 (the only one I haven't used, but I plan to purchase one)

At the price, the sony offers fantastic performance, I actually liked the sound on it better then my Pioneer 860. I also like the 9855 better then my old 860.

i always ran Pioneers, and always loved em. i messed around with some lower/mid range alpine decks a few years back and loved them too. then i got my alpine 9855 and wanted to go to the president of the company and shoot him in the head! also had a very low end kenwood mp3 deck in my beater car, it did what i expected it to...now im on my first eclipse, and WOW is it nice. SQ is amazing, and its got alot of those little "+"s that you never think about but you DO love. SO i think im an eclipse man from now on.
