You do not need 1" MDF; .75" well braced will be sufficient and cheaper.

I use Blondewood (birch) 3/4" from lowes, its $37 a sheet, but its alot lighter than MDF, and easier to work with and less dust IMO.

i'd go with that, you can double that up for 1.5" and it will prally be the same as a single sheet of 3/4" mdf. its so much lighter..

Just use MDF. It's cheaper, and the cheap plywoods at home depot and lowes have numerous voids within them that can resonate when pressurized.
