What would you do ?

Ok as many have read I fried my alts so they will be going off to repair this week. I am running a Taramps HD 15000 at .5 ohm to two Fi 18s and ppi 900.4 to mids and tweets and soon to be another ppi 900.4 in a 4way config but anyways. I got two replacement alts off ebay supposed to be 250 amps but we know there not but there are not doing to bad for now. But am am dropping into the 12.8 range at times ( full tilt when its hot out and alts are hot ) prior to this I was wired at 2ohms and never saw 13.6 which is understandable. I have two 270 alts one singer and one Js and stock alt upgraded to 140 to run truck, Now I can hook into it and get the extra the truck is not using but dont really want to. I have 3 grp 31 110ah juice box battery's for stereo and two for the truck. I have room for one more stereo battery. Now here is my question, Should I get another battery and-or a couple banks of caps or get rid of these battery's and get a lithium or what combination, bigger alts ? Only limiting factor my be room in my toolbox I got for one more battery leaving no room for caps ? or maybe time for a bigger toolbox.

12.8 isnt bad at all by the way, so sit on it for a while. banks of caps really arent expensive and if you get creative about it you can stuff them in a case similar to a battery and hide them where you may have your second batts

i guess my recommendation for the short term considering you have room for one more battery you're trying to fill is to add a bank of caps and see the difference it makes. i saw a massive difference in the hit my voltage took when the current draw peaks and i think you will too

xs power sells cap banks prepackaged in battery cases but the price is set at a premium so if you're more willing to spend money then make it fit safely thats an option. but caps really arent that expensive, $250~ a bank

then slowly phase out your batts for lithium as you get the money

yes, i have a banda 7k, 2 55ah agm's (commonly known as generic rebranded batts made by east penn for duracell, deka, etc at ~750cca), one bank of maxwell 2.7v 3000f caps, and 2 large case GM ad244's with lots of 0 gauge to back it all up

on top of that a ppi900.4, alpine 4 channel, and a dsp for mids (maybe an extra 50-75a of draw)

to be specific, i get about ~230a of alternator output HOT at idle and the banda alone draws ~450a peak with a "soft" clip. i rarely go below 12.5 unless i hard clip on a hot day with long EDM bass lines, but its all been safe for over a year.

i used to hit 10s btw, these numbers are measured with a fluke clampmeter

So your saying add a bank of caps to the three battery's I have now and see how it does when my good alts get back ? Maybe add a second bank ? I really just don't want to waist money on another battery only to switch to lithium in January or atleast that's my plan now.

you'll see a definite improvement, i saw the most improvement in quick short bass lines like rock music, used to go from 14.4 to 12-13v immediately when rock would hit on a kick drum. doesnt even touch it now. i might lose .1-.5v instead of 2-3v. i dont see any concern using them for daily, music is dynamic lol its not like your bass is a minute long with no breaks inbetween.

in my opinion yes, see how one bank works out for you. i think you'll be pleased and paired with lithium in the future you'll be able to handle the immediate current draw much better. lithium and caps just characteristically work that way. doesnt mean you shouldnt keep the alternator charging potential up to par, but you're getting them repaired so i have no insight there.

Ya they will prob do well over twice what these eBay's will do so that will help too going from I estimate 250 amps to 540 on the singers plus the caps and I can do it one step at a time, and judge the improvement. Thanks man I will keep you posted

i paid something like $150-$200 for my bank used and it came with the copper bars for connecting the cells in series, one of the best investments i made im very happy with them

if you dont get them new dont sweat it they dont come up often. they're only $250-$300 for a new bank and the cycle life is much longer than batts so theyll retain their value whereas batteries just arent worth anything besides core charge

I got 36 maxwells so 6 banks with copper connects n buss bars for roughly 190 each and they were pretty much new. I run 0 extra batts but have alot of alt power to back it,I run 3 alts n 2 ampere audio 3800.1's at 1 ohm strapped and drop to low 13's on heavy bass lines.

used banks? doubt it... 200 shipped or plus shipping is a more reasonable price that will sell out fairly quickly

I have a couple of questions on ultra cap banks, First being should I install then between the alt and batterys or between batterys and amps ? Also how do I initially charge them ? Do I just install and let alts and batterys charge them ? I was also wondering has anyone found a battery box or something along those lines to protect them inside my tool box ? I guess I could use one of those plastic battery boxes and it would probably hold two banks.
