Maybe that's how he's supposed to set it? My gain is at about half now too, 400 rms @ 4 ohms, and my target voltage is 40v. That's what I hit with a 40hz test tone, 3/4 hu volume, and no bass stuff.Having your amp at half gain doesn't mean you're getting half the power. I have my gains almost all the way down on my amps, but I'm still getting full power...the gain knob is not a volume knob.

Yeah, I shoulda read that first. It looked like you knew what you were talking about, but confused me at the same time. You said "and that was only at half gain", like you were saying "imagine if I were getting the full 300 watts with the gain turned all the way up!"
Hell, if my amps were at half gain I wouldn't be able to turn my HU past 1/4 volume.
well stated, end of arguement...Anyone who understands how to set gains properly wouldn't be bragging about where the gain is set at. Its set at the 'correct' position, and forgotten about.

Matches output voltage of the preamplifier to the input voltage of the amp...not too difficult.Sure as **** fooled me..what does the gain knob do then?
JimJ, I actually have a question about gain. I haven't set mine too high (or so I think).//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
Indeed.

use a dmm...JimJ, I actually have a question about gain. I haven't set mine too high (or so I think).
But I really don't know how to set the gain knobs. At first I was told to turn it up, and slowly creep up 'till it sounded distorted, then turn the knob down a bit and that was good.
But something about that seems fishy and, well, f*cking retarded
