what to look for in good quality components?

What are some key things to look at in good components, specs wise?

It sucks how some components that have a lower power rating can sound as good as some of the ones with a much higher power rating and sound cleaner at louder levels. Just let me know some key things to look for if you can.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Power rating is meaningless.

Generally, once you get away from pre-built component sets into separate drivers, you'll start seeing more specs published...useful things like off-axis response, frequency response plots that may show possible breakup nodes, etc...

Reading Zaph's driver reviews will start to give you a primer of what's important when selecting speakers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Have patience. We don't get paid to sit here and reply to your whining, so if nobody responds to your thread for a few hours, deal with it.
Takin right out of jimj's sig so settle down, I only have expierience with id's and I like them but there nothing special.

a crossover, tweeter, and mid...

j/k i read alot of reviews personally and auditioned as many pairs as i could... reading specs do nothing for my ears, but thats just me, however cone and tweeter material are something i look at, as well as freq. responses, total harm. distortion... other than that, i need to hear them...

i'm sending my diamond hexes 150 rms per side right now which is there rated power. It gets loud, but the louder it get it starts to lose sound quality, quickly. the mids distort and highs become bright.

I am wondering how much continuous power they are getting, i mean, they are rated at 150 rms, but do they even see 100 rms before they begin to lose there sq ( i always have to stop the head unit volume at 45/62, if i go a few notches higher they don't sound terrible, but they definitely do begin to sound funny and become more harsh.) Now, i' m not saying they ****, i still love them, but would the ID be a better choice here?

almost every pioneer h/u i have owned has started distorting right around 48/50 of 62... maybe it's the signal from the h/u...

You know I think your right on this one. I have a DEH-P6000ub and at high volumes (anything over 45 of 62) my tweets start to get really harsh sounding and distort on heavy bass notes. If I keep it below that magic level its fine and clear...I dunno never understood that but I would like to look at the preouts with an o-scope while hooked to an amp to see if the output was clipped in anyway before being amplified.

EDIT - I forgot to mention my previous Pioneer H/U a DEH-P7600MP did the same thing at right about the same volume level.

x2, the tweeters get bright and the mids distort. I think 44 is my favorite volume level on the head unit. I turn it up to 46 when i want it loud, but it seems to lose SQ alot between 44-46. At least on mine.

and this is with the gains set with the dmm to go no higher than 46 on the head unit.

what's the amp? it might be overrated or you might not give it 14.4v. I'm pretty sure the clipping come from the amp.

Try setting it at 125watt and see if it's better. The loudness won't make a big difference here
