clipping is what happens in an analog to digital converter when the analog voltage is too high for the digital domain (0dB...FS I think). basically they have to equate the voltage to a number, and if you record in 16bit, the max number is 32768; if the voltage equates to something over 32768, it's gonna clip.

16 bits = 2^16 = 65536. In the case of audio, there is positive and negative, so there is a bit removed for sign, thus 2^15 = 32768

The easiest explantion that makes sense but is still complicated to understand is that clipping happens when your nice pretty sine waveform turns into a square waveform.
