what makes a quality kick?

Aiming, size/alignment, integrity/strength (no resonances), etc etc.

As with subs; size and alignment will affect how a mid sounds. You don't want to put a mid designed to perform best IB into super-small kickpanel enclosure, or else results will not be pleasant. You want them built strong so that they don't resonant (just like a sub box. Molding clay works well for this). They need to be properly aimed. Etc etc.

Aiming is the most important IMO. Size isn't as critical as sub boxes but bigger is usually better I think.

I agree with the first part, not the 2nd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Enclosure size (or lack thereof) is JUST AS important for mids as it is for subbass, if not more so since variations in performance may be more noticeable in the midbass range than in the subbass range.
