What kind of DMM do I wanna get to set gains, and other useful stuff?

As long as it has ac/dc, continuity tone test and maybe diode, you're good.

I went out and bought a $200 Fluke and it came with a cheapie credit card sized mini-dmm and I ended up using the cheapie 200x more.

i don't buy anything that uses electricity at Walmart.

Fluke is tops but expensive. MCM Electronics has TENMA meters that are loaded with features for much less than Fluke. Decent quality also.

Any basic DMM will get you Voltage (AC/DC), Resistance (OHMS), and Continuity. Measuring current can be had, but only small amounts (less than 20A) until you get into clamp meters.

Of note: TENMA has a clamp meter that measures DC Current for around $50.
