What is wrong with my system? Help a new user out :)

Hey guys first post here new to the whole thing actually. Have made all the newbie mistakes so far; 8 gauge power cable, no brand "1200w rms" chinese amps, bad sub boxes, etc.

At the moment however I am running a fusion pp-am20001 and a fusion powerplant 15 inch sub (of course with other gear, but the bass is the only problem). This amp and sub combo should kick fairly hard, its no king but at 750w rms into 2 ohms it should be plenty for my system. Running a 4 awg power and ground cable, so should be plenty of flow there.

I bought the sub and amp both second hand and I think there may be a problem with one of them, but I don't know how to find out. Wired to either 2 or 8 ohms the amp will run up to a certain point and then turn off and stop working. Sub is getting pretty old and abused too. Also I noticed a voltage drop from around 14.1v to about 11v when on the bass, could it be this? And how would I fix it?

Is it worth trying to salvage my setup or should I just go out and start again (sub and amp wise anyway)

Your starter battery is getting weak, you should not drop to 11s pulling that much power. Or your gains are not set right and the amp is clipping bad, that could also drop your voltage.

If its a "wet" battery you might want to check the fluid levels, as you might not be charging properly because of it. Also check connections to the battery, clean them if not replace with new terminals. Or better yet, get a real battery like a Stinger SPV or Kinetic 1400, or similar so you can upgrade later on without as much of a worry on current/voltage fluctuations.

Where are you measuring such a voltage drop?

Is there some sort of meter on the amp itself or are you seeing that drop at the battery?

This afternoon I plan to check all of those things, thanks guys. The box is one that I built myself, sealed and made from 16mm MDF. I was measuring that drop at idle, across the terminals.

The car is a Mazda Sentia, so a fairly large sedan. Big for anything not from the states anyway, it's 5m long and almost 2ton.

At this sort of power do I need to go big 3?
