what is the purpose of reverse-mounting subwoofers in an enclosure. in other words why in some installs do the cones face into the enclosure and the basket/motor assembly oon the outside? is this just for looks or is there a purpose?

what are advantages/disadvantages to this?

basically its just for looks, and it also gets rid of driver displacement if you are tight on space for a somewhat bigger box.

those are the only two reasons i could think of.....wasn't sure if there was a sound quality advantage or not

na..its just for more room in ur box some people do it for looks.

if you were tight in space in the first place, wouldnt the sub not fit when you invert it?

Not necessarily. Consider a regular cab mini truck. Many times people build the enclosure to fit behind the seats, then invert mount the sub to extend out from between the seats. Much easier than trying to build the enclosure out that far to accomodate the mounting depth... plus it looks cool.

But remember, especially like with an in-your-face install like my example above, when invert mounting a sub motor noise becomes a possible audible problem.
