What is the next step up in quality and price to a type R sub?

well i dont mind if the next step is 500$ even. im just looking for the VERY next step that you guys would consider above a type R subwoofer. next step up on loudness, then the cheapest ones that are the next step up that you guys would still recommend.
by loudness do you mean sensitivity? If not, then I guess you mean power handling. In this case your first order of business is a bigger/better amp, not subs.

Sundown SA-10, or DC level 3. I believe they are around $160 each and are 10x better then type-r's. I used to have type-r's now I have sa-12s. Put them in a good box with a sufficient amount of power and you'll be happy.

but to answer your question, Type X would be the next logical "step" given that they are same brand. Would those be too expensive?
Probably..

RE SE are the next step up I would say.. 1 15" RE SE on 600w got louder than two 12" Rs on 1000w for me. Also sounded pretty nice compared to the R's

edit: the only issue is getting your hands on some..

now, do the older SE's really sound better than the new ***'s? Or did one person say this and it has become an exploded rumor? The new *** models seem exactly the same just with a different, proprietary basket, which shouldn't affect its performance. The only negative reviews i've seen is people who have "owned both" (which, if true, would likely make their opinion biased) whereas really the only objective way to compare would be a BLIND comparison by a person who has never heard both.

If I had to choose between Type R and the RE SE/*** i'd buy the RE as i've heard many great things, but would it really be that much of an upgrade? The RE does have lower Fs though, which translates to (slightly) better sound quality and deeper bass extension?

Like I said it will be an increase in SPL and SQ, if you do it right. I owned both consecutively.

I went on RE's website.. Seems like they changed the spec on the old sub. The 15" weight 25lbs even they say it weighs 16.5, also used to have 600w power handling, now 300... RE maybe shouldn't be trusted..

lol you're reading the specs for the SR, not the SE.
