What is the deterministic quality of an SQ sub?

What really makes for an SQ sub?

Is it the ability to respond to different notes quickly and without "lag", or more the ability to reproduce a certain type of sound? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif

I just purchased an ED 12O for my brother along with a 400W avionixx amp. It is in a 1.5cf sealed box built like a tank. It sounds GREAT.. however in my ears, it lacks warmth. It has mucho punch, and really sounds like a kickdrum in the trunk! It could keep up with anything we threw at it! Currently have the cutoff @ 80hz.. before, when I had 3 10" xplods, anything over 50hz was just UNBEARABLE! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

However, I felt it lacked the ability to reproduce rap/techno to my tastes.. it just lacked warmth, and fullness (smoothness)

It was, however, MORE than loud enough for me..

If only I could throw a Velodyne HGS-18 (now called the DD-18) in the truck... listening to that sub @ one of my buddies house was just.. ****ing... well.. better than sex! :thumbs_up

It posses all that I want in a car sub //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So, what makes a sub have a fuller, richer sound while still being able to keep up with fast paced music? (the HGS-18 is the perfect example of this)

What gives a sub the ability to play real-real-real low?

I stress this, becuase the HGS-18 would play so low, you could feel it, and the only sound was **** around rattling.. oh it was sooo badass!! Why did Dave have to ****ing move to Arizona!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif THAT was verycool, IMO!

And, how can I achieve the sound I want, without massive SPL levels?? This is in a 100% daily-driver app.. no competition (SQ/SPL) whatsoever..

As far as what music I will be listening to.. (if this helps) Mostly rap and techno and a mixture of rock (heavy, industrial, soft, oldies) and some country. I drive a truck.. how could I NOT listen to country music? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Thank you.

Zylo.. back to the n00b, Part I!

If you think the O is a little too 'attacking' for you, try the A in a slightly larger than recommended box... You'll get a more mild attack (plenty forceful, but again - not harsh-like), and a generally an overall smoother sound.

You can EQ either to sound like the other, but that takes time and a robust EQ.

YOU'RE robust.

Ok take a Sony Explode Sub setup....dual 10"s running 500W RMS. It will sound like ass no matter what you do. Take a Concept or MBQuart sub setup...dual 10"s running 500W RMS will sound supreme. Just because the voicecoil can process more beats and the general construction of the woofer cone, surround and voicecoil are all factors. And the material that the Magnet is comprised. It can produce a crisp, tight bass or it can produce a smooth rounded bass or it can be all around crap.

Well, what most people describe as "warmth" is typically distortion in certain harmonics (Not sure which ones, I think it's 2nd and 3rd). As far as depth goes, add some polyfill (1-2 lbs.) or build a larger enclosure and that should help out ...
1-2lbs for what volume?

Well,

auditioned some JL subs today.. never heard a JL sub before.. I must say, they sounded good! Listend to a 15W3 and a 12W3 V2.. they seriously lacked the PUNCH! of the K, but it isn't quite what I want //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif so that didn't matter to me. The response of the woofer seemed pretty good, with no harshness between notes (something the K seems to have)

The 15W3 did not impress me. The output was ever-so-slightly louder, yet didn't have much of a different sound... not boomy at all (which is what I figured it would sound like compared to a 12"). This could be due to the wrong size box, or many other variables, but the 15" did not impress me at all..

With two subs playing vs. a single sub (two 12W3 V2's), it seemed to have more of that "fullness" I was speaking of.. and a heavier bottom end. So maybe 2 12's are more of what I should look for...

All of the listening I did was on a 300/2 JL amplifier.

I wish someone 'round here had a Magnum D2, Brahma, and XXX I could listen too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Where in holy fu*k is Nerk? If it's anywhere near Cleveland, you can come up in about a week or two to hear a 15" XXX. And ngsm13 lives in Cincy, he's got some D2's.

If I stand on the roof of my house, I can see Buckeye Lake. All that seperates me from the lake is 1/6 mile of woods and Papa Boo's!
