What is the best way to rip DVDs?

Well I guess I'm new at this, I have torrented movie's before, but never ripped them off of DVDs. Im trying to backup my collection to my brand new external HDD, and I have no clue how to rip the DVD. I tried google, but I'll be ****ed if google hasn't turned into one big advertisement now, and no useful information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i use dvd shrink and just create an image file you can also use nero...i prefer shrink for it's easy to use interface, and it's pretty quick...and free

unless you are wanting to convert them to a compressed file type like an avi or something, in that case there are other programs like imtoo an a few others...

AnyDVD to bypass copy protection

DVDShrink to rip the movie.

I run DVDShrink in reauthor mode and choose "no compression"

That way I can rip just the movie into ISO format with no loss of quality and no need to navigate menus to play it.

yeah...avi would be what I wanted.

I would have to torrent Imtoo, as its not freeware. Are there any freeware programs that can do this?
Auto Gordian Knot, it is really easy to use, takes me about 1.5 hours to convert a movie into AVI format with 5.1 audio

All depends on your computer specs though, if you have a slow pc it could take you hours

Just rip the movie using the method I mentioned above, then take that file and convert it to an AVI

If you're wanting to back it up as a DVD for burning use later, CinemaCraft Encoder is probably your best option, but also the hardest to use (and most expensive if you don't torrent it). Second best would be RipIt4Me, which combines DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and FixVTS.

Now, if you're wanting to back up to .avi for space reasons, h264 is probably the best route to go. Take a look through the guides here and find something that works for you: http://www.videohelp.com/guides/category/how-to-backup-dvd-to-avi-divx-xvid-h264-wmv-vc1-6;33#6;33

dvdshrink is no longer updated, i still use it but not to rip the dvd.

Ripit4me is awesome. Its actually running Hot fuzz right now.

I also have DVDfab Plat

AnyDVD

CloneDVD

and a few others...depends on the movie and type of encryption

Some require alot of work, some are easy as hell. If one doesnt work chances are you need an updated verison.

afterdawn.com has all your answers...

I already have the movies...and its alot easier to carry around a HDD with my laptop, than a stack of 100 DVDs

anyways, I found a way to do it. It might not be the best, but it works.

I'm using dvd shrink to create an ISO image, and then I Have Daemon tools virtual drive, and I mount that ISO image to the drive...and voila...DVD on my computer.
