what is the best size sub

The one that performs it's best in the room you have, and can handle the power you need it too. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'd definitely say, 17" has the best sound quality.

No, seriously, there's no answer. The sound tuning of the sub and box combo matter a lot more than the size.

- If you want tight sound, go sealed, that has the best transient response. And don't even think about a bandpass!

- For low distortion (clearer sound), more total cone area is better. This could be one big woofer or several smaller ones.

- For low distortion (clearer sound), you want a long stroke woofer. Usually the 12s and 15s are best.

- For low distortion (clearer sound), look for a design with an extended or T pole, a shaped pole vent, and a magnetic circuit optimized to saturate the center pole.

My friend designed the Alpine Type Rs following all those ideas. I don't know about other woofers out there.

i agree with most of your points, but this is a misconception. transient response is a function of box alignment...no more no less. a sloppy sounding sub is sloppy b/c of inductance, NOT cone size. i have heard many ported boxes that sound identical to sealed boxes (as far as sq), but they had balls down low that the sealed boxes didnt.

ever heard a pair of brahma 15's in 6.6 cubes tuned to 30 hz off 2200 watts? tight as hell, and painful when cranked.

i tend to prefer 15's or 18's...and i port them if i can //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'm considering saving up for a pair of JL 15w3's or 18w3's....

but SQ is a huge concern. I imagine they would be just fine with a good install though
