I have always felt a battery should come before an alt if you don't have the means to do both.

They kinda go hand in hand, to be honest.

You want a nice battery than can hold a good charge and voltage for you, but on the other hand if your alternator wont supply the current to keep that good battery charged, it doesnt do you much of a **** good.

I upgrade whichever I feel is lacking the most. If the stock batter has 1000CCA, works fine, and no other issues and you have a 75A alt, then I think upgrading the alt should come before upgrading the battery.

Well I guess to an extent that logic is good. Stock lead acids though even with cca of 1000 aren't as good in other specs as other technologies though. However under the scenario you mentioned it seems to be more understandable that the alt should be first.

Ya, I am leaning toward this being the case. Which is why the debate will seem to split down the middle.

Being that the alternator is the heart of your electrical system it is by far the most important. You will see a lot better results from upgrading your alternator over adding another battery. However, if your battery is already in poor shape then you have other issues to take care of than upgrading the alt.
