What is everyone running for Home Audio?

Eh Dere Hi Dere Ho-ser
I'm just getting back into Home Audio and am looking for suggestions. My current set up is pretty decent, but I'm looking for something new. I was looking at Denon, Adire, Infinity, MTX, and a couple others. Building my own speakers is also a possibility.

Planning on making my own tower speakers with the following components if it works:

1 Vifa D25AG-35 tweeter

1 Vifa P13MH-00 midrange

1 Adire Tempest woofer

The only ***** it seems is the whole passive xover vs active xover. Does anyone have any experience with making cheap, active xovers? Or should I just rely on a passive xover that is (resonably) easier to make?

One last note, if anyone can direct me to freeware that can plot the frequency response of all drivers, please do so. I like LspCAD but the price is pretty high for just a (new-found) hobby.

Any comments are welcome.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Custom designed home theater towers.

Dual Peerless CSC-X 10" vented, tuned to 24 hz

Dual Seas P17RC midwoofers, sealed @ .33 cubic feet each

Single Seas Excel T25-001 tweeter. MTM alignment.

Power comes from all over the place, from my regular receiver to car audio amps to tube drivers to pro sound amps, all depends on what I want to try out.

Behringer DSP8024 dual 31 band EQ plus dual 3 band parametric / RTA / noise gate/ clip limiter as primary processor.

27" Sony Trinitron tv. (very rarely used)

Couple other things in the works.

Thats who I was looking for to reply;)

What do you think of Adire products, as far as home audio goes? Worth it? Or do you suggest something else?

For the price, they are extremely hard to beat. Especially the DIY kits. When you factor in what it'll cost to build a crossover, test, tweak, and get it 'just right,' as opposed to some of adire's kits, you are usually faced with the reality that you are fighting an uphill battle.

You can get wonderful results with DIY, you may end up spending more with research and whatnot than what a proven DIY design from adire can give you though.

I spent $150 a side on crossover parts alone, because I refused to have anything less than Goertz inductors and Chateauroux capacitors.

I can't stress it hard enough, if you are going DIY, crossover-crossover-crossover.

Again, crossover.

It can make a 20 dollar set of speakers sound like gold, or a thousand dollar set sound like coal. The crossover is by far, where it is at.

And a new entertainment center I threw together today... just to add to the list. Going to disassemble and break out the remaining Imron 5000 I have from my towers and paint the shelves here early Jan..

I looked up those drivers in my handy dandy Madisound catalogue:p . I was thinking about using Vifas in my first loudspeaker project because of their price and (a few)reviews. Then using the Tempest for greater SPL(which I'm leaning towards). Can you give me any thoughts on this proposed setup? Also, are their any resources that go over active xover design?

I have a basic, limited electronic knowledge but not nearly the depth of understanding most of the more complicated schamatics.

Seem's to me that I will be planning my system around Adire.

Nice new center....Ive got to get around and do one of those soon.

Anyways, I'll do a quick diagram and get back to you guys.

Thanks,

- Steve
