It adds power to a certain frequency range, usually 40-50hz. Remember though, every 3db of bass boost you use requires TWICE the power, something your electrical system and sub cannot keep up with. Basically, leave it off.

bass boost sends a signal with HIGHER peaks at low range bass freq's to the processor in the Amplifier.

basicly.. youre better off with it OFF seeing that if you send an ALMOST clipped signal to the amp and then add bass to it.. you will FUBAR your sub.
