what harm would happen by running lower gauge wiring then what is required by the amp? Ie: running 8 gauge wiring when the amp suggests 4 guage wiring.

If your amp tries to draw more current than the wire can supply, the amp will be starved for power, and the fuse on the wire will keep popping to prevent the wire from catching fire/melting.
