what does "bottoming out" mean?

Totally different. Bottoming out is when the speaker's VC former slams into the backplate. Basically, you moved the speaker's cone beyond it's mechanical limits.

Sometimes depending on your electral system, your amplifier doesn't get the power it needs and can't "control" the output as well. The speaker gets a crappy signal and can't control its own movement and slams into the motor backplate.
