What does an EQ do that a HU cant?

also, sometimes I find it easier to make adjustments to my EQ through an external EQ rather than a HU with a built-in EQ. I like Alpine's EQ engine, but it can sometimes be difficult to work with.

yea man u dont need that fnacy shiz mang all music sounds the same its only gets louder or quieter
you my friend, are eaither deaf, or just plain stupid and ignorant - regardless of what you believe in or the color of your skin.

eaither get somewhat of an education - and use it, or please keep quiet. saying all music sounds the same is the most ignorant thing ive ever heard out of somones mouth. if you think that the so called "music" you listen to cant sound any better, your hearing should be taken away from you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

im using a 30band stereo EQ because im a freak. honestly if you are just into daily driving dont even bother with more than 10~15 band graphic\parametric. external processing usually adds less distortion to the signal because it has better internals (depending on the quality of the products - headunit including) rather than spending $300 more on a headunit with a couple crossover points and an ok EQ, id rather spend that money on a rather nice EQ and fully active crossover that will be even more flexible. but thats just me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i have a clarion 7-band eq. i love it. it was only 50 bucks and it really works well. i personally like the sub controll and the volume control on it. it also has an aux you can it that will kill the sound. as long as you dont have the tv or dvd on. for fifty bucks you really cant beat it.

i found a dirt cheap pioneer 9 band EQ new on ebay for somehting like 50$ shipped, do you think it would be worth it? or do i need something better? it has 7 volt outs, and i like how simple it looks, but for such a low price im thinking it cant be too good....

Most people don't need a outboard EQ, especially something with a lot of bands (like a 30 band). You can easily muck up the sound while trying to adjust with those elaborate EQ's, they are more or less meant for competition or for those that know how to use and tune with them.

Realistically, 3-5 band parametric is good enough for most, and bass and treble for your ultra plain jane setups.

well this one appears to have mid settings and a sub setting too, which id like over the typical bass/trebble. i was just wondering if there is something wrong with cheaper EQs. im used to using the 10 band type EQ settings on my reciever, so i dont think i will mess anything up with one in my car. i can always set everything flat if it sounds bad, so i dont think i could go wrong.

Agreed. Without an RTA a 30 band 1/3 oct EQ will hinder the sound of a system more than help it. I start with the RTA to get it close to flat then take the EQ into the cab and fine tune it for my liking. It is a PPI DEQ-230 btw.

RTA?

does that make the pre amp signal flat, or what?

and like i said, i just want a sub bass and a mid adjustment, and if my HU dosent have it, ill most likely be getting the pioneer one off ebay.

and i realy hate fed ex. my HU was said to be on the delivery truck at 6:30 this morning, and now at 10:10 it still isnt here. **** liars. thats why i like USPS, here at 11:30 every day, nice and reliable. with fed ex im basically waiting next to my door looking for the truck to come down my street, and they didnt even come....
