Really I hear a lot about how great they are figured they'd be heavier hitting than the type rs? I've never owned any or heard much of them in person

Well if you are getting the sa-12s. The advantage is they can handle more power. The disadvantage is that you will be losing cone area. Now if you bought 1 more sa-12 after you traded i would do it.

a pair of SA 12s will smash on four ARGGGGHH 12s all day. Given proper power that is. I would not run a set of 3 subs though.

Well I have a nice ten cube box ported and tuned to 32 hertz for 4 subs I would keep this one but the sa12s come in a large nice ported box made for them however I see on craigslist a few people near me are selling single sa12s for about 130 to 150 so I plan to purchase I 4th probably off there and use the large box I have.

And the type rs and sa are rated for the same power so what differences could I honestly expect?

Both sets of subs are rated @ 600w RMS, but the SA-12s are gonna take more abuse. The Type R 12s will take about 800-900w of clean power. Some people do more, but that's what I'd call safe. The SA-12s will take a little more per sub, but you'll need more overall power for 4 Type Rs than 3 SAs. Personally, I'd go with the SAs, but that's just me. Their performance will be totally enclosure dependant.
