What do I do?

when the q-logic kick panels require you to do work and you're not capable of it? If you know something about computers, I was looking for something that was really just plug-n-play - they're not.

Should I just go to some shop and ask them to install them for me? I have no tools (except a drumkey and phillips screwdriver) and don't build stuff.

I got the universal ones and in the manual it was like - if a flat surface isn't available, some fiberglassing and epoxy may be needed - just what I was trying to avoid...

Let me say I don't think they're worth the $90 I paid for them - feels like cheap plastic and is hollow. however I did pay $90 for em and I'm going to MAKE them work for me...

LOL, dude... you kinda need to decide if you're serious about doing your own work or not. Learning is fun, DYI is fun and very rewarding.

Look at it this way - for the price of having someone else do it for you, you can usually buy the tools it takes to do it yourself. And you'll have them for the next time.

For this adventure, all you need is basic shit that every car audio enthusiast should have anyway. Go for it... we'll give you moral support.

You can do ANYTHING. Never forget that.

1) are you ready for a mess?

2) are you good with your hands?

3) do you have a respirator?

4) have you ever fibreglassed?

5) do you have the time to learn?

6) do you want to learn?

7) are you prepared for failure if it doesn't work out?

8) if mistakes are made, can you pay to have them fixed?

9) how involved in car audio do you want to be?

10) what do you expect the outcome to look like?

You will never learn if you do not try, however sometimes it is best to have things done for you. There is adequate information on these forums that can point you in the right direction. You need to ask yourself if it is worth the time and effort for you to attemp this or not.

1 - not really but if it's inevitable - it happens

2 - haven't ever built anything and don't really fix things either

3 - nope

4 - nope

5 - nope, but I can make some time

6 - of course; I'm always willing to learn something new

7 - yes

8 - no - I don't make a lot - the 600 I've spent on the equipment thus far has been more than what I intended and I'm startin to feel the effects

9 - pretty involved, but more on the fundamental instead of commercial aspect of car audio. I'd rather have knowledge in how the stuff works compared to what to buy (based on opinions).

10 - look ok.

the thing is I want to try. the main pressure is coming from my family. cause when stuff comes through ups/fedex and they'll ask what is it they say I'm wasting my money..blah blah blah.

then when I'll mention to them that I'm learnin how to install this stuff they say like you better let somebody do it for you cause you'll f*ck something up and don't take the risk - you

can't learn how to do something by reading (which is contradictory to their advice).

how I feel is, I'd want someone to do it for me, while I'm watching. Cause based on the stuff I've read, I think I have an idea of what to do/what's involved; I'd at least like

to see how it's done correctly, before I do anything. After that, I'd have no problem trying and failing - at least I'd know what I would be trying to achieve.

never say that u cant do something. If you say that then youll think that and it will be shitty. Always be positive. You can learn a whole lot by reading, but to know technique you need to see it done.Dont pay someone else to do it cause you will spend way more then you could ever imagine.

Oh yeah. tell your family to quit their *****in. Its not like they worked for the money.

thats just my 2 cents

My family said the same thing to me when I was younger, yet I trained myself and within 1 year I ended up with an install job and then sales. 4 years later I was working in sales for the largest retailer in the province. 4 years after that I opened my own store, 7 years after that I opened my second. Before my mom passed away she said I think you were onto something and apologized to me for the things that she said. You should have your parents read this thread, maybe they will have a change of opinion.

There is much to learn in this industry, what you want to attempt is best done by someone with the experience to do it. I would recommend that you either do a ton of research on it before attempting it yourself or like you said yourself, have someone show it to you so that next time you can do it yourself, just like tying your shoes. The latter is hard for a shop to do, they have various reasons for it. Start reading up on this topic in various forums, I know of one on http://www.revscene.net in the Audio forum that is being done right now that is similar to what you want to do. Have a look and tell me what you think.

couldn't find the thread you're talking about - it's in the car audio, video, & security tech forum? what key words should I look for.

If I had some people I knew/cool with that knew how to do this stuff, I probably wouldn't even be asking these questions. However, I'm the only one in 'the group' that has a car...

If I did know someone, I'd watch them work on their car or something at least. That's why I feel my last resort is to pay some shop and watch and ask questions.

I mean just the first time, I need to have it done. After that, I feel I can make adjustments to that setup on my own, and then after that, I'll be able to do some full installs.

I've heard of people using sound deadening material to strengthen Q-form kick panels. All you would need to buy is a relatively small amount of deadener material and probably a knife to cut it.
They came with a roll of some white stuff - in the manual it says it's polyfill. Is that enough or am I probably still gonna need sound deadener? I know I said it felt like cheap plastic - it's actually pretty hard - I just think for sound, it won't stand up

The most rewarding part of car audio is doing it yourself. It's not going to be easy, in fact; it's going to be downright discouraging for a while. However, in the end it is all worth it when you can say "I did the install."

In time, the frustration will turn to pleasure once you get the hang of it.

For your Q Forms, try using some spray sound deadening from Cascade, Stinger, etc.

http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/CAEVB1S

Apply it in several thin coats on the inside of the Q Form until it hardens into an evenly dispersed thicker coat.

That should easily firm up the plastic, and take care of any unwanted resonances at the same time.

The good part is, if you can spray paint, you can use this with no trouble.

Just grab a can of the spray deadener, a roll of masking tape to make sure the outside of the panel doesnt get covered, and have plenty of newspaper to protect the floor or workbench from overspray.

Aside from that- fresh air is needed, and readily available for no charge. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Read first, then implement what you have learned from your reading. Same as in school.

DIY is quite rewarding when the end result turns out as you plan. Plus, it really is a lot easier than most people imagine.

take it easy,

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately, I have to say I still've been going to different shops and getting quotes...

What I think I can do:

- Cut the speaker holes in the kick (however don't know where I'm gonna get a saw from - the [cooking] knives I tried don't cut through it - I'm not the only one in my house who doesn't make/fix stuff)

- spray the deadener stuff in the kick

- put the speakers in the kick

What I don't think I can do:

- mounting kicks to the actual car through fiberglass

Basically, if fiberglass wasn't involved I wouldn't be asking but I really don't have the funds to pay for somethin if I mess up. I read about how you guys try 4 and 5 times before you got it right...I just can't afford that...

oh ok I see the thread now

- but that stuff is for doing it from scratch

AFAIK, in my situation with the q-logics - I just think I'm supposed to fiberglass over the kick panel area, which will serve as the bottom part of the q-form since they're open on the bottom. They somehow have to attach together.

...Now that I think about it, I'm all for trying to fiberglass.

Hoping that I keep this thought in mind, here's some questions:

1. Should I just follow the instructions for how to get the bottom part (the part that is molded from the car's interior) fiberglassed (the sticky in the fiberglass forum)?

2. Then what? How do I get the q-form and the fiberglass sculpting attached to one another?

3. How long does it take - really, let me ask, can I do the stuff that requires me to be in the car in less than an hour? If not, that's a problem...no garage...cold outside...heavy snow outside...side street...

4. What materials and at what quantity do I need at MINIMUM! fiberglass, resin, tape, some brushes? that it?

I probably won't be doing this stuff til like a month. that's the compromise I'm willing to make - going to a shop will probably have it done in no time
