what causes amp to go into protect?

I recently bought a nine.1 from a forum member and after around 45 mins of use it went into protect and won't come out.

What should I do to try and get it out.

All connections are good, receiving good power of course, listening volume was low when it cut out and went into protect. Ventilation is good etc. I didn't hook up anything wrong or anything dumb like that.

use a dmm to test it's output voltage. unhook the subs. also rca's inputs can go bad as well.
