What are the negatives of large port area besides length?

Well I've been looking into a single aeroport for my new build

the box is going to be 3.4-3.8cubes. I was wanting to use a 6"aeroport(although it needs to be modified at the flare as they are not as good as the 3/4" ones) but they are on backorder

I have a couple sections of pvc, 5.875" and 8"

I think the 8" is too large and the 5.875 is too small. The 6" with good flares should be enough

opinions?

It will be for 2x12's new type R's or SA12's

The plan was to have the subs inverted port external for daily(3.8cubes @34), then regular mount the subs and port in box for testing(3.4cubes @36)

Larger radiating surface means a higher peak. I'd personally never do 16in^2 per ft^3 because of mechanical issues and the fact that I tune too low to use that much port and keep length below 60". 12in^2 per ft^3 works fine for me.

I do not know what is ideal, but I do know that "port noise" can be created by a subpar port...hopefully Rams can comment on this as he is very knowledgable about boxes

You mainly have to take into consideration three things.

1) What subs you are using and what kind of excursion they're capable of

2) What frequency you're tuning at

3) How hard you intend to push the subs(excursion)

Box size really has nothing to do with it, it's just that we use the 12-16 rule because most boxes are generally in the same ballpark as far as volume for a given size sub(s) goes. The critical variable is how much air they are displacing.

You are trying to achieve a ratio of port area to box volume for a given tuning. I think that comment is a bit misleading saying box size is irrelevant.

I think he is saying the box is not what matters when picking a port size, the sub is. And people use box size because a sub that wants a 4cu box will have similar specs as another sub that wants a 4cu box. Correct me if im wrong ram, just the way i understood it
