Watermelon Could Have Viagra-Like Effect

As you ice down that watermelon for the Fourth of July, get ready for fireworks from the fruit. New research shows watermelons can have a Viagra-like effect. At the Annual Watermelon Thump Festival in Texas the news was greeted with surprise, and some humor.

 

"Really," said one person at the event when told of the news. "Get me another one(a watermelon)."

 

The director of Texas A&M's fruit and vegetable improvement center has discovered that watermelons have an ingredient that delivers Viagra-like effects and may even increase libido.

 

There is a catch: the phyto-nutrient called citrulline that relaxes the blood vessels is found in highest concentrations in the part you generally don't want to eat, the rind.

 

Scientists are working to breed watermelons with higher concentrations of citrulline in the flesh. The researcher who conducted the study says the watermelon rind also has a beneficial effect on the heart.
