I was wanting to get a job in the computer field. I was thinking maybe starting out with like an IT Help Desk job. I like it alot and think I am pretty good at it. What first steps should I take to pursue this? Certifications I should get and such? Where I can look for a job? Thanks..

Truthfully....A+ is a waste of time. Most entry level it support desk positions won't require it, and when you are ready to move on, you'll have enough experience that you won't need it for your next position.

If you really want to make some money, get into parts/system brokering and reselling. With the US in the financial spot that we are in, more and more companies are looking to buy used/refurbished parts and systems to save a few bucks.

the "computer field" is huge, what type of IT help?

i would get your MCSE for sure, it can be something like 2000 dollars if you go to microsoft for 2 weeks and do their intensive training...

then go from there, what type of stuff do you want to do?

I have never heard of that.

Trouble shooting or something like that. Also maybe things such as CADD.

Start from the bottom and work your way up. Certs help, don't get me wrong, but they mainly look flashy on a resume, as does a degree. Experience and knowledge will get you farther in the field than anything. If you can show them you can do the job than you have a good chance. But if you are going to do anything, get certified.

A+. Whether or not its required, it's always good to put another cert down on a resume. Also take maybe the windows xp test? You'll get a cert for that, plus it qualifies you for an mcp cert. (I think this is still in effect, it has been a few years). These are easy, basic get in the door stuff to get. And then if you get hired, see if you can get tuition reimbursement for ms classes for your mcse. Once you have that, there are several branches of certs you can take from it, depending on where you want to specialize. Be aware, in the upper end of the it field, jobs are getting scarce as companies are merging, outsourcing to india or getting more efficient in general. You may want to look it up and verify, but I read a report recently saying IT in America would cut back an additional 3000 jobs in the next few years. Still, there is always work to find, just more competition in getting it.

Now then, if you REALLY wanna get crazy, and go to a job thats going to be in a niche market of IT, but is getting more vacancies as people retire, then go mainframe baby. Big iron. No one trains for those now, and it's all old codgers hell bent on retirement these days.

Ripe for the picking, but good luck finding training for it! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
