Want to start learning to play guitar, where to start?

dont start with chords. if you want to learn guitar do it right pick up a beginners book so at least that way you will have a bit more of an idea of guitar. and if you really want you could take a few lesson that never hurts

I got an electric with an amp (looks like a $150 combo kit) and a old acoustic. I dont know where to place my fingers, how to hold the guitar, etc. I want to learn the basics at first then get lessons at a community center later on. Where do I start?
Go to a music store and buy a chord book...

learn to play power chords and get your fingers blistered... dont bother with tight solo riffs or anything.

try and learn some chords maybe, learn what a power chrod is and learn to play that power chord without hitting other strings [mute them with your other fingers]

for example, this powerchord is a G

and this powerchord is a C

you only want to hit the TWO strings you are playing at any time, and if you are playing a faster riff, then you need to mute the surrounding strings like such-

as you can see my middle finger is muting the first string there, and my pinky finger is muting the last. get that down, and then just slide around and listen to what sounds good, this is more pop stuff and simple punk rock music, but it will get you the strength in your wrist and the quickness to move around the fretboard and you will actually be able to play some stuff //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

just go get this poster and practice chords A through G, and get used to them, once you do that then buy a book and crap.

dont bother trying to get all sophisticated rigth off the bat.

I play Power chords and bar chords a little bit different. I use all 4 fingers for the chords on top E and use 3 on the 2 A . I would post some pics, but my camera=geigh and does not work correctly. I guess it sounds the same, it's just a matter of how you were taught.

I would start by learning regular chords first such as G, C, and D. Power chords are a pretty big stretch for beginners. Good luck.
