VoiceCoil

How would i be able to tell if i have blown one of my voicecoils? I have checked them with the dmm and everything and checks out, but i still get this weird burning smell now...(after i hooked up my amp and "boom" sparks flew when i was connecting speaker wires and it blew my main power wire fuse). I now have it hooked up and i have to crank the gain almost all the way up to get the sub 15" xxx to start hitting amp=PA 2500d, just wondering if this could be a bad Voice Coil or give me input on what you guys think it could be?

Is the sub still playing normal? Are there any odd sounds coming from it? If the coils still check out on a DMM, I dont think its a coil. Actually, it sounds more like an amp problem to me.

sparks were flying you say? fuses are blowing?

u sure the sub is wired right? if its in 8ohm (dvc4) it wont hit hard at all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

definatly get the amp checked out.

Yes im sure its wired right....to 1ohm and i forgot i had my yukon running and i had power, ground, and remote wires plugged in. THen when i went to plug in my speaker wires .....sparks and blew main power fuse. Amp still powers up find and everything, just dont think i should have to turn gain almost full to get it to wang with 2400 watts....know what i mean?

Matts RE MT was sparking like crazy when we strapped it to 2+ kw and burped it full volume free air at 20 hz. the coils were rubbing and connecting in the gap making sparks fly, but the sub kept working.

yeah it doesn't make sense. I went over to his house and looked at everything, everything looked to be hooked up right, checked the VC's with DMM, checked the wires, blah blah blah.

The only way the sub would really start to wang was with the gain very high or bass turned up on his Kenwood H/U. Actually did you ever turn your gain down weece?

I mean it's very very loud IMO, but I think you were expecting more from it. Just my $0.02. If there is an actual problem with it, I'd like to know how to fix it so I can learn.

edit: actually I remember you had the gain down at one time and it still wanged...I think it sounds good weece, you just wanted more spl or something. It is very very loud, with good SQ.../shrug I don't think you could have hurt it, we will do gain setting thing tomorrow and see how it sounds. it kills my SE I know that much //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

didnt wanna start a new thread before people flamed me telling me to SEARCH.

I was driving today and I started to smell something burning and my subs werent hitting as hard.

So when i stopped i opened the trunk and there was smoking coming out of the port of my box, so I took the sub out, nothing looks burnt inside, so i'm guessing its a voice coil?

It still works, but it sounds like shit and it makes weird noises. i just diconnected the fuse to the mono block amp.

can anyone confirm that the voicecoil/sub is blown? so i can send it in for warranty

You blew it, so you cant return it for warranty, unless you got it from BB/CC.

The VC went under some extreme heat, and it probably started to burn, its blown.

Weece what gauge wires you running to amp? Is there a 2nd battery? As for that burning smell that can sometimes be the glue from the cone if theres to much. In very extreme heat, sometimes that happens. The sub might still be breaking in also. Some subs are very underrated. As for the dissapointment on how hard they hit, you should check how many volts you pulling.
