Voice Coil???

my friend has one of those 4" thick audiobahns in his f150 powered by an PA amp at ~980rms. Well the other day, he blew a voice coil. My question is....Could he unhook the blown voice coil and just run one of them at 1/2 the rated rms??

Would this work or would it just damage the sub even more?? Should he just go ahead and buy a new sub????

You wouldn't really want to. Only powering one coil is going to change almost every T/S parameter to values you don't know, which means the required box sizes and such will change and you won't know what the "new" required size is (unless you can get Audiobling to tell you the T/S parameters with only 1 coil being driven). Plus, the one blown coil might be stuck in the gap or scraping, which is not a good situation.

Overall just a better idea to either send in the blown one, or buy a new one.

It's a totally different driver with one coil. It's also possible that the other coil will follow soon after it. As was already said, you don't know if the coil is scraping or what else might be wrong. Get a new sub or get that one reconed.
