Using each channel of amp to power 2 voice coils?

Is this a bad idea? I have a 2 channel amp powering a dual VC sub, and each channel powers one VC.

It's what I'm doing now, and I think it sounds ok, but I'm wondering if it's hurting my SQ by having 2 different signals going to each voice coil.

If you have your amp set to mono I think you're fine. But, I'm pretty sure you're doing some damage to your woofer if it's playing stereo.

Yeah it's playing stereo.

I wouldn't have done it if I knew that it would be doing this. I thought it would be able to play mono, but I don't think it does unless it's bridged.

Hmm, now i have an excuse to buy a nice monoblock //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Well your powering each VC at 4 ohm so bridged 8 ohm will yield the same rating, just two identical signals.

Oh yeah. Cool. Thanks bud.

No new monoblock for me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif.

Yeah I know.

I was just trying to justify spending money on a toy that is not necessary at all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Now time to rewire my voice coils.

Be sure to series them not parallel.
If he runs them in series that would make an 8 ohm load on the amp... Which would significantly drop the power from the amp and only power his sub 1/2 of what they are getting now...

I have the same problem with my amp... In 2 channel each channel is stable @ 2ohms but it I bridge it, it is only stable at 4 ohms...meaning I would need a dvc 8 ohm per coil sub.

Would getting a splitter and running both channels of the amp of 1 RCA split into 2 be ok? Just wondering since I have thought about this before.

... I hope I am wrong...

Use these ratings as an example

1) 100x2@4

2) 200x2@2

3) 400x1@4

4) 200x1@8

Hes using option 1 and I recommended option 4. There is no difference in power, just the output signal.

To optimally use a 2 channel amp with one sub you will need a dual 8 or dual 2.

Actually if you bridge a perfect amp with no losses it should quadruple the power of one channel, but typically you will only see a doubling.

I can't explain the physics of it, but that's how it works.
