Using a CNC Mill to make Baskets?

Has anyone ever done this? I am considering trying to make my own home brew subwoofer just as a fun project and I really got inspired to try it after finding a CNC Mill I could use. Anyone ever do this or have any ideas or anything?

I've worked on a CNC mill quite a bit, and you're getting into a big project just to make a basket. That's a lot of number crunching, and it'll probably take quite a few times to get something that's even useable.

Well I can speak from experiance I run CNC equipment everyday I am a machinist at a Nuclear power plant. A very experianced operator could do this but its not for the novice. I would shy away from it just for the stock you would need to make a basket would be very expensive like 1 bill for each basket. Just for the Aluminum stock:eyebrow:

Well my school has a CNC Mill for student use and I asked them about using it and they made no mention of materials. I guess if I started doing something really expensive though they wouldn't be too keen on it. :/

I doubt they keep 6061 laying around in a big enough chunk to make a basket out of also.

I doubt they keep 6160 laying around in a big enough chunk to make a basket out of also.

Probably not and you would want 6061 or 7075 anyway.

you would be wasting a lot of material too. maybe your school has a foundry you can use? try and do some casting.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. My school has an unbelievable amount of material that I can use, we are an engineering school. I was probably just planning on making a small 8" or something just for fun. Probably this summer.
