I was wondering, how safe is it to use usenet? Do you have much of a chance of getting caught for downloading music on there or are they not targeting newsgroups yet?

I wouldn't know but downloading from usenet is better....don't really have to wait in line & you can't beat the connection...I'm able to download @ 95% of my DSL's max download speed (1.5Mbit/s I think). Only thing I hate are sometimes posts (files) are missing and/or purged. Also, the groups are limited per server (ie, one server doesn't have every single group there is on usenet).

Ya, it is pretty badass, i downloaded 4 cd's in about 10 minutes. But for the just downloading and not sharing, people have been nabbed for only downloading... I guess the only way i can be perfectly safe is to get securetunnel, but it's quite a bit extra.

Usenet is anonymous for the most part. Everything you download on it IS encrypted, so technically everything you download is legal, what you do with it is not. Don't worry about getting caught though, they don't really care anymore now that we have hurricane victums to care about....

They work, but I think they lowered the DL limit and shortened the retention when they increased the up/downstreams.
