Upgrading to 15s, need recommendations

**** are walls truely that hard? i guess if i did get that 18, i could push maybe 3.5k cause itd give me a much better budget, god **** you guys hahahah! every post persuades me otherwise, i love it but hate it
I've never done a wall. They can't be that difficult but I would assume its a lot less simple than just throwing a big box in the back lol

Doubling power doesn't give anywhere near double loudness/spl. In a perfect world doubling power gives ~3.16 (sq rt of 10) db (about 40 percent more sound pressure and less than 40 percent louder to the ear). So to get 6.32db (2x spl, less than 2x louder to the ear) you'll need 4x the power. But that's in a perfect world, you'll gain a lot less than that in real life. Your sub(s) will be more efficient than your type r's though so you might actually get twice as loud by running 6000 watts. Your electrical won't support that but 3-5kw will def be a bare minimum 50 percent louder
i really like how you explained that, gives me more confidence that i wont throw up haha, yeah 6k i know for now is way too much, baby steps for me, and i personally do like SPL over loudness, i like to try and even the bass with my mids and highs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

would one of these 18s even handle that much? its at 2k rms
It'll laugh at it unless you are wiring to .5 ohms or lower, then it'll be just "satisfied" with the power.

Stuff on paper and real world is different. If you have a 3.5k amp and are only wired to 1 ohm, expect to be at 1750-1800 watts at 35 ish hertz burp after rise afterwards thats just barely enough to fully feed the sub. Head room is always good. I'd really just pick up that taramps 8k that gotgixers has for sale in the classifieds section. You can either wire higher or set the gain for only 3k rms via the multi-meter and have head room.

Its not gonna kill your electrical as long as you keep it low. When you got enough batteries, you can let loose. I'm sure you'll be a lot happier than you would be with a 3.5k. I actually get way louder and less voltage drops with my banda 7k then my DC 3.5k and they are about the same price used/new. The banda is also ice cold, sitting there on its @ss barely doing anywork but its already way louder than my 3.5k

Most good brands under rate their subs. The rated power is most likely something of a conservative clamped power after box rise that is guaranteed to never even stress the sub in any situation even if the power is dirty. You'll be perfectly fine running double the rms rating. After impedance rise it'll see something like 2000 watts from a 3000 watt amp anyway. Just stay under the "max power" rating, which doesn't really mean anything anyway but you probably shouldn't surpass it by much lol

Hell, if you are up for it, do a 21" death penalty, or two 15 HDC4 in a wall. Just buy a design. Dont be afraid of getting too loud, ITS NEVER TOO LOUD. Plus simple thing would be to turn down the sub level on the head unit... Seriously its not that hard to control the power your amp sees or to set it for daily listening. Dont worry about your mids and highs being drowned because this bass thing is just for demos or when you are itching for punishment and choking /strangling.

Noooo he can't have that one! lol I'm tryin to buy it tomorrow

this is true, i could wire to 4 ohms if i wanted with a higher amp. i just want to get a 2D sub cause itll give me bass on my jbl while i save for the amp, and im only afraid to get a really big amp due to whatever the hell happened with my alpines! i just really dont wanna lose money again haha, so how about if i did this, and i know this is hypothetical but you guys have experience. Compared to my 2 12s on the jbl at 33, what would the 18 do on a 4k at 33 hz be in compared to? cause when it was running i was honestly happy with it, i dont wanna get to big and be like " why did i do this!" ha

You'll be happier. Also i'm pretty sure the alpine was clipped in one way or another that lead to death. It happens man, most people dont even realize. Music has different bass recording levels, some songs have stronger bass than others. that bass level can easily drive your whole system into clipping while you just sit there thinking your setup was set properly and clean. Head room is always good to have since you wont set it for max power and it wont be clipped when these stronger bass songs get played..

ok ill go look at this 8k amp haha, although how would i tune it lower? gains?

gains, sub level on the head unit, bass eq levels etc.. Anything that affects the strength of the bass will affect the signal/pre-out voltage which will determine how much power the head unit tells the amp to put out

oh yeah i forgot i could do that with my dmm, i should probably at least test my speakers haha, but if i got that amp i could wire to 8 ohms even and push over 3k just to test it, although itll probably sell before i get enough ;(, and youre saying do this on the 1 18 correct?

on any sub that matches the ohm configurations. You can do 1 18 or 2 15s walled or even a 21". i'd personally go with the 21 now if you are trying to win 4 15s. how loud was his setup? I'm assuming he does proper custom box, good electrical ETC

it was loud but not super loud haha, it was barely louder than my other friends 2 p2s tuned to 30hz on a skar 2k, and i didnt have much time to look at the electrical but im sure ill see him again ha, im going to do 1 18! and use the money id save from the other 15 to put towards the amp

i'd get the D1 so you can wire to 2 ohm for now and you can wire to 1 ohm if you ever plan on walling it later with two 18s. Read up on box rise, when you wire to 2 ohms, you'll actually be around 3-4 ohms after box rise. Dont ever think you are fully getting the rms stated out of any amp because it doesnt work that way, unless the amp is a constant power amp with regulated internal power supply.

Tune to 35hz-37hz for your genre though. You dont need to tune low with HDCs to hit the really low notes. Its not gonna sound shitty until you get above 40hz port tuning. I'm at 35hz right now and its still a bit geared for decaf and such, 37 would have sounded better on dubstep. These subs arent like other subs where you need to tune low to achieve any low notes. In fact, andrew mcollough, the owner of "the black nasty" (youtube it) did extensive testing and said 35 to 40hz tuning is best for these subs.
