Upgrading Sound System?

I'm completely new here and I was reccommended here by a friend. Hoping you guys can help me out.

Okay, so here's my problem. I drive a 2003 Honda Accord Coupe V6. I'm young at 20 years of age and my music is pretty loud (not car rattling loud but pretty loud for an avg person). However, I get a distorted sound whenever I turn my sound up to around the 16-20 level. So I want to upgrade but keep my stock HU. I'm a total noob when it comes to audio so I'm looking to you guys for help.

What do I need bascially...6x4 FRONTs, 6x9 REARs, and a 4-way amp is all I have in mind so far. I'm not an audiophile but I want a loud (enough) and CLEAR system. I'm a addict when it comes to CLEARITY of the sound. I dont want a monster sound system just something to upgrade this CRAP system to something in the level of a GOOD system.

do you have RCA jacks in the back of the stock headunit?

The cheapest way to get clearer sound at a louder level, provided your head unit puts out a clean signal at that higher level, would be to simply replace the stock speakers with ones that are alot higher in quality and power handling capabilities.......most speaker manufacturers make every size speaker imaginable so finding exact size replacements shouldn't be too hard.......if you're wanting to add amplification and other components then this changes the situation to add all kinds of good options

yes I will be upgrading the amp as well. Having the 125 watt stock system is horrible. Swapping out the speakers are must-do on my list. But I just want to know what else goes with those speakers to give me the sound I want.

I'm not a big fan of subs but if it's needed, i'll put one in.

Get some good speakers first off. Then get an amp that pushes maybe 75 or 100x4 (as long as your new speakers can handle it). and take it from there.
