Upconvert Dvd players, Do they work?

They work if your HD TV does a crappy job of up converting. Don't expect HD quality - The DVD itself is still standard definition. All you are trying to do is get it to 1080 lines the best way possible.

Many of the HD TV's do awesome if they are fed an HD signal, but the scaler built in the TV for standard definition scaling sucks.

You can also run HDMI which is a plus.

For my projector, I run a Home Theater PC. What a difference to makes for scaling DVD to 1024 lines vs. running a DVD player. Some of the newer projectors have awesome scalers, but mine is older and works great with the HTPC and with HD.

I have the one in the link you posted earlier. It's pretty **** good for the price. Make sure you run HDMI though. Divx playback is ok, and it will play any type of dvd I throw at it ( -r +r RW etc) It also has upgradable firmware. Outputs Dolby Digital but not DTS. Don't know if that's a factor for you though.

i actually bought that exact one not too long ago along with some hdmi cables. there is a huge difference in sound/video quality from the rf cable i have ran into the room. ive watched planet earth numerous times on my LG lc7d and the picture is excellent. ive never owned a lcd/hd tv though so i cant compare it to anything. i have mine upscaling to 720p.

i was trying to get one at work (sears) but weve been out of them for the longest and so many of them were ordered for customers so i just went to walmart. the one i grabbed was the last one. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif good luck

Here is good info on it. Sounds like as long as you get one that works, people are very impressed with the processing power.

Outputs Dolby Digital but not DTS.
According to response #17 in that thread, it will pass DTS through the digital output.

I don't have one to verify, but you might want to further investigate if you want DTS.

I have a Philips DVP 5960 that I bought for $80 a year ago. It is upconverting and does a remarkable job on my standard def dvd's compared to my 6 year old Pioneer. Well worth the money. The tv does make a big difference, I have a LG 50PC3D plasma, though I compared picture quality between the old Pioneer and new Philips on the LG and the Philips did a much better job.

I use the hdmi on the Philips.
